For the last 10 years, the National Queer Arts Festival has celebrated LGBT music, dance, visual art, spoken word, comedy, theater and film. This year's event, which kicks off on June 1 in San Francisco, will be no different-over 300 artists are set to display their works at 50 events in 13 venues during the month-long festival.
Highlights of this year's National Queer Arts Festival, produced by the Queer Cultural Center, include: the QBall 10th Birthday Party & Opening Night Performances (June 2); Queer Latino/a immigrants performing their border and immigration experiences (June 1); Alison Bechdel's graphic novel (June 6); Dorothy Allison & The Bent Writing Institute high school students (June 9); Queer Women of Color Film Festival (June 8-10); TransForming Community-trans performances (June 20); and the comedy of Marga Gomez & The Boys (June 30).
The Queer Cultural Center, founded in 1993, is a multi-racial community-building organization that fosters the artistic, economic and cultural development of San Francisco's LGBT community. The center implements its mission by operating programs commissioning and presenting queer artists that promote the development of culturally diverse queer arts organizations and that document significant queer arts events taking place in San Francisco. By presenting, exhibiting, and screening queer artists' work, the Queer Cultural Center contributes to the development of a multicultural perspective on the LGBT experience.
